For a review of Optical SETI see article in the November 2006 issue of IEEE Spectrum (pp. 7, 32-37) or go to www.coseti.org.  As the article in IEEE Spectrum points out, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence in the visible, UV, and IR parts of the electromagnetic spectrum has just begun.  There is a need for help from others in funding serious investigations such as the PhotonStar project which makes use of amateur telescopes all over the world in a coordinated effort.  Details on the PhotonStar project are found at www.PhotonStar.org .

About the Author
Photonics pioneer Monte Ross, and Fellow of the IEEE, is chairman and CEO of Ultradata Systems, Inc. in St. Louis.  Since 1965, Monte has published five technical articles about various aspects of optical SETI, including receiver design and the use of pulse position modulation in laser communications.
