The following is a list of problems, one or more of which has been said to severely limit the performance of Optical SETI systems.

 

1. Quantum noise.
2. Planckian starlight.
3. Doppler shift.
4. Doppler chirp (drift).
5. Laser linewidth.
6. Limitation on beamwidth 1 arcsecond.
7. Don't know "magic frequencies".
8. Lack of suitable local oscillator lasers.
9. Too many frequencies to search.
